In Chinese medicine, lotus seeds are neutral in element. It tones up the heart, spleen and kidneys. Following TCM theory, they can nourish the heart and calm the nerves to prevent insomnia; alleviate diarrhea caused by a spleen deficiency, as well as cure urinary disorders and vaginal bleeding.

However, if you have abdominal flatulence, or constipation, please only eat lotus seeds in moderation.

Lotus seeds are also considered as an auspicious item as it supposedly evokes good fortune. During the Chinese New Year, candied lotus seeds are given as gifts or tokens to visitors. That is why you sometimes see lotus seeds offered in celebratory Chinese banquets as a dessert, in a rich soup, or in dishes like our Lotus Seed soft cake.



Jujube   Jujube

Jujube Fruit is as popular in China as apples is in the United States. It has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.

TCM has a point of view that jujube is very useful for insomnia, restlessness and fatigue. In Chinese medicine, the jujube is prescribed to nourish the blood, liver and spleen; to strengthen Qi; to cleanse the body through detoxification; to quiet irritated and racing mind.

Here is an example. Jujube is probably a highly suited remedy for Blood Deficient symptoms (pale skin, dry skin or hair, sometimes feel dizzy when standing, or ‘floaters’ in your vision), in which case jujube tea should be taken daily.

Jujube can be eaten dried as you would with regular dates (but be careful of the stone) or soaked before use. They can also be simmered for 10-15 minutes in boiling water to make a tea, which is a common way of taking jujube in China.

Snow fungus has been used in Chinese medicine for over 2000 years to heal various ailments. It is commonly used to enhance body liquids, to cure dry cough and also heart palpitation or the trembling nervous system.

Snow fungus is also often used as a stimulating herb and a beauty augmenting medicine. It is widely used for the betterment of the skin tone.

Recent researches have unveiled that snow fungus has numerous other health benefits, especially useful in healing atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, and even certain cancerous growths.


Sound Sleep Soup Recipe:


To restore good sleep

Ingredients in one dose:

15g dried uncooked lotus seeds; 15g dry seedless Jujubes (red dates); 3g snow fungus; 10g Longan; 1 small piece of rock sugar; a pot of water

Lotus Soup


1. Preparation

Soak snow fungus in clean water for 10 min, or until expanded. Cut off stub, rinse, and cut to small pieces. Pre-soak dried uncooked lotus seeds for 2-3 hours till becoming soft. Briefly wash jujube and lotus seeds separately.

2. Cooking

Bring a pot of water to a boil over high heat. Add snow fungus, reduce heat to low fire, and simmer for 30-60 minutes until snow fungus becomes very soft. Add lotus seeds, jujube, rock sugar into boiling water for another 30 minutes till the soup becomes lightly thicken.

3. Use

Serve hot, or cold, daily.


Diabetes use sweets instead of rock sugar.
